Self-Regulation and Goal-Setting Skills encompasses emotional control, mindfulness, goal-setting, and other strategies that contribute to managing behaviors and making progress toward personal goals. It emphasizes both emotional and behavioral management, blending sports mentoring with social-emotional coaching, focusing on personal development, mental resilience, and the tools needed to excel.
After 30 years of private lessons, decades in the dugout, turned veteran self-contained special education teacher (behavior Interventionist), I've learned that once trust is built, the most important question becomes: How do I win my at-bat? How do I quiet my mind and maintain control?

Empathy and Trust:
Special education teachers are often experts in building trusting relationships with students, fostering an environment of safety, understanding, and support. This is crucial for creating an open, communicative relationship with athletes, where mental and emotional support can directly impact performance.
Application to Baseball & Softball:
Coach Schellsmidt has developed strong interpersonal and communication skills in the classroom, forming deeper connections with athletes. These connections foster trust, making athletes more receptive to coaching, feedback, and guidance. By using tested strategies, coach can also help players navigate the emotional ups and downs of a long season, fostering confidence and improving mental clarity on the field.
Remember, as the workload and expectations increase, the key is to choose to change and commit to continual growth. To truly succeed, we must learn how to get out of our own way. We need to help ourselves by making conscious decisions to break through mental barriers, manage emotions, and stay focused on our goals.
In 2020, at the peak of the COVID pandemic, online classes became an essential part of my teaching. This shift allowed me to blend my elementary-level virtual classroom approach with my private hitting lessons for players ranging from youth to college. Over time, I’ve merged strategies from both areas—the emotional regulation process and the mindset I’ve honed in the college baseball dugout and batting cage. Now, let's unite these experiences. This program combines emotional regulation (from a veteran behavior interventionist) with sports coaching (over 30-years of experience), offering a practical path for growth.
